Alejandro Bonafe was born in 1999 and grew up on the island of Ibiza, Spain. In 2016, at the age of 17, he moved to Premiá de Dalt, just a few meters from La Poma Bike Park.
He initially rode BMX, but when he noticed there were few dirt events, he changed his mind and decided to switch to a mountain bike. The transition went smoothly, and he quickly progressed, gaining experience and competing in competitions across Europe.
The rise
Alejandro, one of the leading third-generation Spanish dirt jumpers, was given a great opportunity by Sherwy, a second-generation former professional rider and one of his idols. “He was aware of my progress, and one day I met him. Unfortunately, he had a motorcycle accident and broke his back, which meant he couldn’t ride anymore. He gave me the keys to his compound, Morrilla, where he had his private jumps, and told me I could do whatever I wanted there to further develop my riding skills.”
The drop
Three years ago, he suffered his first serious injury: “I was thrown from my bike and landed at the bottom of the hill, broke my collarbone, and had to undergo surgery.” His recovery went well, but he got back on the bike too soon. On the first day, he fell again, landing on his injured shoulder: “I bent the plate in my collarbone and needed another operation.” Ultimately, it took a year for him to fully recover. “I learned that everything in life has its own process, and you have to trust it.”
Comeback
Refreshed and more motivated than ever, Alejandro began competing and show-riding again. At the end of last year, he was named Rookie of the Year. The recognition for his hard work and dedication was great, but even better was what came with it: a wildcard for Crankworx. Alejandro was the third Spanish rider ever invited to compete in a Crankworx slopestyle event. The only other two to achieve this significant feat were the Lacondeguy brothers. “I’m still speechless. I’ll do my best to finish on the podium, or at least in the top 10. If I can do that, I can go to Canada for the Joyride.”
