The Médoc is a peninsula in southwestern France, framed by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the wide Gironde estuary on the other. Famous, vast wine-growing regions stretch along this river – and this world of wine is not just a backdrop, but the very heart of the marathon.
Anyone coming here to run a new personal best, optimize every second, or fiercely chase records is in the completely wrong place in the Médoc. This race is less of a high-performance athletic event and more of a grand, pleasurable spectacle.

This year, the marathon’s theme was "80s Disco" – fitting for the race's 40th anniversary. And this theme is embraced: around 80% of the participants show up in elaborate costumes. Neon colors, shoulder pads, glitter, afro wigs, nylon tracksuits – everything is represented. Instead of the sober atmosphere of a classic road race, it feels like a giant carnival party on running shoes. Along the route, there is a consistently exuberant, joyful atmosphere; people laugh, dance, toast each other – and in between, they also happen to run.
The second major unique feature is the course itself and the refreshments. The route winds through the vineyards and leads right through countless châteaux, which you can admire up close along the way. You often run directly through the estates, through courtyards, or past barrel cellars. At the refreshment stations, they serve not just water, but above all what the region is famous for: wine. This is accompanied by cheese, Cannelés Bordelais, entrecôte, tart, ice cream, sausage, oysters, beer, and much more. It is more of a culinary tour through the Médoc than a classic marathon.
